Options for High School Students in Sober Living

The adolescent brain is still developing and needs specialized support that addresses the issues inherent in this stage of growth. When a high school student is in recovery, saying ‘no’ to the friends and situations that led to their addiction is overwhelming. Returning to their neighborhood and old school can undo everything they have achieved in treatment. One study found that virtually all adolescents returning to their old school reported being offered drugs on their first day back in school. Recognizing this threat to sobriety, we often partner with Newport Academy Day School in Darien, or Fusion Academy & Learning Center in Fairfield. Together we provide an umbrella of services – giving students a safe, supportive academic environment to reach their full educational goals, while continuing to focus on their recovery at Westport House.

When these two schools are not options, we address a client’s educational needs through distance learning technology or collaborating with their Fairfield County high school during the day and having them return to Westport House in the afternoon. We can also provide support for clients to achieve their GED.

Fairfield University recognized the need for recovery services for its student body years ago. In fact, Fairfield’s Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) is a pioneer in this area and is recognized as one of the leading programs of its kind and is the only university in Connecticut (one of the very few in the northeast) offering off-campus recovery housing.
